:: My Twinnie with her baby boy Hayden::
With the arrival of my nephew Hayden almost a year ago, came an intense need to craft for the little lad. I made 2 slings for him when he was brand new, but he soon grew out of them.
Then I remembered the slings that we had made using a design that we came up with to sell at the Farmer's markets this past summer. It is a super simple design for a pocket sling, with adequate room for babies of all ages.
Due to the inability to sell our creations. We are sharing yet another tutorial pattern with you, my friends.
*****************************************************
The following tutorial is for an average size woman ( I am 5 ft 71/2 and average weight)...but if you need it bigger or smaller you can make adjustments to fit comfortably by increasing or decreasing the length of the fabric.
Supplies:
High quality cotton or a light flannel.
Sewing machine.
Thread.
See, we said it was easy!
You would either increase or decrease the number of inches used in the overlap here to adjust for a bigger (less of an overlap) or smaller woman( more of an overlap).
I like leaf designs in my sewing.
By only sewing the first two layers together, you are making a circle to fit around your body with a pocket to hold the baby.
Letting the reinforced overlap become the shoulder support.
This sling is not only super fun to create, but it also is very comfortable for not only a babe, but his Mama too!
As with the majority of our shared tutorials, this is made entirely of my own creation. It wasn't brain surgery or anything, but it did take time and thought. Use it to make a sling for your own babe, or to give as a gift. Please though, be kind enough to NOT sell anything made from it and PLEASE don't go and write a book using any of my pattern and then become a Gazillionaire (But if you do, email me and I'd be glad to give you my address so that you could share the wealth...hee hee hee.).
And PLEASE, please, PLEASE carry your baby mindfully, There is a risk of baby asphyxiation while carrying a baby in any sort of carrier (even your arms)...always check positioning and to make sure that he/she is able to exchange air.
For further information on precautions....here is a link to a great site on babywearing....called appropriately enough...thebabywearer.com.
Specifically great are these two articles.
Babywearer for instructions on safe baby wearing.
and
Baby positioning in a sling to avoid any injury.
This is only a tutorial...Common sense goes a long way.
Thanks, and happy baby wearing.
